A downloadable sound pack

hiiii~

These sound effects were made in Famitracker and represent actual sounds an NES can make! Of the 5 standard sound channels available on the NES's 2a03, I decided to limit myself to using only the noise and triangle channels. In an actual NES game, the sound effects would interrupt whatever music was playing, so using too many channels would be noticeable. Beyond that, these were just kept sort of simple as a design philosophy! Devs back in the 80s didn't spent a lot of time manipulating volume envelopes and the like. Their sound effects sounded, well, like these! I hope...

Because "triangle channel" might not mean much to many of you, I have labelled these as "tone" and "noise," along with a number, and a short label (e.g. "hit") which is only for categorization, not to limit usage.

There are both .wav (if you need to re-encode) and .ogg (recommended for production use) renders, as well as .nsf files.

The original .nsf files can be rather quiet, so I normalized them after exporting to .wav/ogg. If you don't want this normalization, you'll have to convert them again. Foobar2000 can convert nsf to wav easily with the appropriate plugins.

Finally, these sounds are all licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License, meaning you are allowed to use them in your games (or other works) as long as you include a notice giving me credit for the work anywhere there are credits (e.g. in-game, on the itch description page). Specifically, you should include in your credits:

  • my name, Jessica Robo
  • the name of the asset pack, Authentic 8-bit Sound Effects Pack
  • the URL to this page

Double finally, I would appreciate it if you donate when you purchase the asset pack, even though there is nothing making you donate! It will at least let me know if I should release more sounds. ^O^

If you have read this far, have a hug for your troubles <3.

If you don’t want this normalization, you’ll have to convert them again. Foobar2000 can convert nsf to wav easily with the appropriate plugins.

You may also want to suggest Audacious Media Player.

It’s a competitor to foobar2000 for Linux, BSDs, and Windows that comes with an NSF player plugin (Specifically, one for Game_Music_Emu) and can be used to convert chiptunes to Wave, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, or MP3 simply by setting the desired recording settings and then toggling the record button in the toolbar before starting playback.

(And, since it’s a descendant of XMMS, the original Linux WinAMP clone, it can also use WinAMP skins if that’s your preference.)
